HOOSIERS FEEDING THE HUNGRY
Did you know that one out of five children in Indiana goes to bed hungry each night? This is an unbelievable statistic for a nation as blessed as ours. Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry (HFH) is a nonprofit organization that enables farmers and hunters to donate deer, cattle, hogs and large game to feed the hungry.
We are planning our 6th annual Bow Shoot and Barbeque fund raiser, Sunday August 28th , We are Estimating that 350 people will attend and we are in need of raffle items and items for both silent auction and a live auction. We would deeply appreciate any contributions you can afford, whether it is a gift certificate, product or even financial support.
HFH raises financial support to pay state inspected, approved butchers who participate in the program to process, package and freeze donated animals into nutritious meat. There is no cost to the farmers or hunters who donate their animals. The meat is distributed to those who need it through Community Harvest Food Bank; who provides food for approximately17,000 different individuals per week through 480 local charities in 9 Northeast Indiana counties. The hardest commodity for food banks such as Community Harvest and other local feeding agencies and ministries to acquire is protein—which ironically is the most valuable nutrient in the development and growth of a child. On average is cost about $1.30 per pound of meat, which is less than $0.30 per meal. Our goal this year is to provide enough protein to feed 300,000 meals. In order to do this we need to raise a minimum of $90,000 for these 9 counties.
We have teamed up with other groups who are helping us raise awareness and money to pay local butchers. The butchers have reduced their rates to cut and wrap the meat, which is donated to the Community Harvest Food Bank. Some of our partners and supporters are as follows: DeKalb County United Way, Wal-Mart, Noble County United Way, Indiana State Department of Natural Resources, Community Harvest Food Bank, FiSH (Feeding Indiana’s Hungry), NRA, REMC, Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne and the Noble, Wells, Adams, Steuben County Community Foundations.
Thanks to everyone’s support, Hoosiers Feeding the Hungry was awarded the Charles B Fine “Friends of the Food Bank Award” presented by Community Harvest Food Bank
